Water as a human right in Jordan

Last year I have joined a team of five Arab researchers who worked on developing a regional study assessing the understanding of the UN "right to water" concept in the Arab World. A series of  four case studies were conducted on Jordan, Palestine, Egypt and Lebanon plus a combined comparative study.
The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights adopted in November 2003 a General Comment on the Right to water setting out international standards and obligations relating to the right to water. The study aimed to assess the integration of such standards in the water policies and operations in the four countries.
The papers summarize the main challenges facing strategic and coordinated action towards the UN concept of water as a human right, identifies what types of processes and institutions needs to be developed to meet the challenges of the concept and provides best practise examples from countries that have shown innovation.
The study was supported by the Heinrich Boell Foundation in Germany and you can download all the four country studies plus the combined analytical study from this site
