After three years of implementation as an interim (temporary) law, the environmental protection law has been finally endorsed by the Jordanian Parliament on Wednesday March 8th 2006.
The session for discussing the law by the parliament was not dramatoc as all of the articles were approved at high speed except for article 6 that states penalties of environmental violators. The focus was on penalties against importation of hazardous wastes, where the deputies asked for high penalties against those found guilty of dumping polluting material or importing environmentally hazardous items. As a result violators face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and or JD100,000 fine.
The full text of the law will be uploaded to this site after receiving the official text.
