The first batch of the environmental police unit, which is expected to start operating in early September, will begin a month-long training workshop today, an Environment Ministry official said yesterday.

Experts from the ministries of environment, health, agriculture, energy and mineral resources and municipal affairs will today begin  training the first 150 officers,  consisting of personnel from the Public Security Department, the ministry’s spokesperson, Isa Shboul said.

During the workshop, the new officers will be trained on all the country’s health and environmental regulations so they are fully equipped to deal with any violations, Shboul added.

The force will be handling offences and issues related to smog, water pollution, littering, tree cutting and illegal hunting, Minister of Environment Khalid Irani said in a recent interview with The Jordan Times.

They will also be responsible for inspecting factories, industrial zones, and picnic areas and fining violators of environmental laws.

The unit, which will eventually be comprised of some 1,000 officers, will be based at a newly acquired headquarters near the capital’s Abdoun district.

According to the ministry’s spokesperson, a media campaign will be launched coinciding with the inauguration of the force to spread awareness on the unit’s mission.
